Hit a hole in one for cancer research at the Ingham Institute Charity Golf Day. The Ingham Institute is getting ready for its biggest Charity Golf Day yet with rugby league legend and media personality Mark Geyer leading the day with Team Ingham Institute on Friday, April 6
Held at Twin Creeks Golf and Country Club, this event marks the sixth charity golf day, proudly supported by the Nursery & Garden Industry NSW & Act (NGINA) and Landscapers Masters Association NSW & ACT (LNA). The event is held in memory of Mike Skegg, former CEO of NGINA, who lost his battle with cancer in 2012.
Mark Geyer (pictured) said he was thrilled to be part of this charity event as Master of Ceremonies which supports ground-breaking medical research in south-west Sydney and to learn that here in Sydney, the Ingham Institute are conducting a world-first human trial for the treatment of advanced prostate cancer patients with a simple tablet. Associate Professor Kieran Scott leads the Institute’s prostate cancer research programs, an area that is very close to his heart given his own father’s family history with the disease.
This personal connection with the disease gave him the unwavering determination to develop a new, world-first drug to help treat prostate cancer called “c2”. c2 is a Sydney story, conceived, grown and developed right here in south-west Sydney over 15 years of research.
“Our work has proven that c2 slows the growth of prostate tumours in the laboratory by blocking an enzyme which causes tumour growth. This first human trial, being conducted right here at Liverpool Hospital, will examine whether c2 will be able to travel from the gut to the blood in people with prostate cancer,” Associate Professor Scott explained.
