One Institute. Multiple Centres of Excellence

Ingham Institute has made a profound impact on the health and wellbeing of south west Sydney, Australia and the world, since launching in 2012. Our bold vision will see an even greater impact as we expand to multiple medical research centres across greater south west Sydney.

Today

Ingham Institute, Liverpool Research Centre Stage 1

Today, the Institute is focused on six key research themes:

To support and complement these research streams, clinical trials is another key pillar within the Institutes structure to ensure our research is applied. Clinical trials are essential in determining the safety and effectiveness of new medicines, therapies and treatments. Clinical trials give patients early access to many lifesaving treatments.

The Ingham Institute is set to embark on an ambitious growth strategy. We have commitments for Stage 2 expansion in Liverpool, and new research centres in Campbelltown and Bankstown.

The Future

We will create a series of medical research centres with major hospitals in Liverpool, Campbelltown and Bankstown. They will facilitate scientific, clinical and industry collaboration whilst providing a bench to bedside solution with hospitals and universities, ultimately serving the local, national and global community.

These centres within the Ingham Institute network will enable greater application of research discovery to the development of new prevention strategies, diagnostics, technologies and more effective treatments.

While the Institute is relatively young, the collective research capabilities are proven, and most importantly, our impact on patients and communities is proven locally and beyond.

There is however much more to be done. We must increase our research capabilities and create additional centres to enable greater impact of the patient centred health paradigm. Expansion of this partnership model will drive efficiencies through shared resources, technology and scientific platforms.

One Institute – Multiple Centres of Excellence

Our network model is based on one medical research institute across multiple centres of research excellence. Each centre focuses on specific research aligned to clinical priorities for south west Sydney.

This network model will include:

  • Ingham Institute Liverpool Research Centre, Stage 2 – doubling the existing Institute as part of the health, research and education hub
  • Macarthur Research Centre – a new medical research centre in Macarthur on the Campbelltown Hospital site
  • Ingham Institute Bankstown Research Centre – a new medical research centre near the new Bankstown Hospital.

The network has each research centre co-located with their local hospital and our tertiary education partners WSU and UNSW.

This network brings together health, research and education, centred around the patient needs, enabling many unique benefits:

  • Connections – between the university clinical schools, health network, medical research and the patient
  • Collaboration – with university programs linked to medical research and the community health
  • Engagement – ease of engagement in research for tertiary and post-graduate students, and across the community.

Our Growth

Our current activities and plans include:

  • Growing our existing world-class research teams
  • Adding new research teams to address areas of key unmet need
  • Expanding our capabilities for research to align with clinical priorities, including:
    • Clinical trials
    • Robotics and Applied Medical Technologies
    • Innovation and Commercialisation
    • Industry Partnerships and Collaborations
    • Researcher Education.
  • Adding and increasing our administration support including:
    • Philanthropy and Access to Grants
    • Media and Reputation Management
    • Human Resources
    • Finance Management
    • Operations and Facilities Management
    • Data Analytics.

Expanding our physical footprint with our university partners will ensure a stronger presence across the three largest SWSLHD hospitals – Liverpool, Campbelltown and Bankstown.

One Institute Efficiency Principles

The key principles of this network model include:

  • Governance: a governance model that balances network wide strategic and Board oversight with a high level of local autonomy. The existing Ingham Institute Board will govern the network with local research leaders driving local research initiatives.
  • Leadership: each research centre will be world leaders in their chosen research streams.
  • Community: each research centre will focus their research on what is required for their local communities in line with the university research direction and SWSLHD Research Strategy.
  • Collaboration: strong links between education, teaching and research will inform the patient centred health paradigm.
  • Management: support and non-research related functions will be shared across the network of research centres to ensure efficiency and optimal use of research funds.
  • Impact: this model will create the ‘best of’, with the ability to speak with one voice as a large, integrated, translational research network, while allowing the local health district, university partners and research to create patient centred community outcomes.

Patient Centred Health Paradigm

This integrated model will drive efficiencies through sharing resources, technology and scientific platforms.

Join us

The Ingham Institute in Liverpool was founded with the generosity of great Australian philanthropist, Bob Ingham AO. Other community philanthropists included Lady (Mary) Fairfax AC OBE, the Perich and Vitocco families.

Join these great visionaries and philanthropists who initiated the Ingham Institute for Applied Medical Research. Expressions of interest are sought for collaboration and investment as we expand and create this dynamic and innovative research precinct across greater southwest Sydney.
