Professor Delaney AM, MBBS, MD, PhD, FRANZCR is the Head of the Radiation Oncology Academic Unit at Ingham Institute for Applied Medical Research (Ingham Institute) and South-West Sydney Local Health District, the Lead the Cancer Clinical Academic Group for the Sydney Partnership for Health Education, Research and Enterprise, a member of the Collaboration for Cancer Outcomes Research and Evaluation (CCORE) at Ingham Institute, senior staff specialist at Liverpool Hospital, conjoint Professor for University of Western Sydney and Professor of Radiation Oncology, South-Western Sydney Clinical School, UNSW. Between 2011-2021, he was Director for Cancer Services, South-West Sydney Local Health District (SWSLHD), the most rapidly expanding cancer service in NSW.
A radiation oncologist with over 35 years research and clinical experience in breast cancer radiation oncology, health services planning, treatment access and treatment equity research. He has been successful in obtaining 38 research grants valued at $35M from NHMRC, ARC, ACRF, Cancer Institute NSW and Cancer Australia amongst others. He has published over 280 peer-reviewed papers with 10,000 citations, (80 papers published in past 5 years) including Lancet, Lancet Oncology, Journal of Clinical Oncology and Cancer (peak US Cancer journals), Radiotherapy and Oncology (peak European Radiation Oncology journal), International Journal Radiation Oncology Biology Physics (peak US Radiation Oncology journal), JAMA Oncology and Journal of Thoracic Oncology (peak international lung cancer journal), and 12 book chapters.
His main research interests include radiation oncology service delivery modelling, breast cancer, ductal carcinoma in situ, big data, large-scale quality systems, radiation oncology incident reporting systems, cardiac toxicity, cancer survivorship and equity in cancer care. Professor Delaney has had significant involvement in policy decision making and service planning through committee responsibilities at State, National and International levels. Committees include European Society of Therapeutic Radiation Oncology Radiation Safety and Quality Committee, the International Consortium for Health Outcomes Measurement (ICHOM), National Breast and Ovarian Cancer Centre, NSW Cancer Institute, NSW Department of Health, Federal Dept of Health and Ageing, Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Radiologists.
