Ingham Institute is founded with the generosity of two great Australian philanthropists, Bob Ingham AO and Lady Mary Fairfax AC, OBE.
2009–2011
Research groups are invited to become affiliated. 24 research groups join, including Medical Oncology, Radiation Oncology, Palliative Care, and Medical Physics.
2012
Prime Minister Julia Gillard opens our state-of- the-art medical research facility in Liverpool– our first site and the only one of its kind in South Western Sydney.
A Clinical Skills & Simulation Centre and a Research Bunker housing the MRI-Linac program soon follow
2013
Ingham Institute becomes home to NSW’s first Circulating Tumour Cells (CTC) Facility; a specialised cancer scanning technology that measures single cancer cells in small blood samples.
The Correlative Microscopy Facility is established, housing a state-of-the-art Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscope (FESEM), – one of the most powerful microscopes of its type in the world.
2014-2021
The Institute experiences exponential growth—350 affiliates working across 35 research groups, including Cancer, Population Health, Immune Tolerance, Psychiatry, Neurology and Stroke, Cardiovascular, Diabetes, Obstetrics, Nursing, and Orthopaedics.
2022
A new strategy: creating centres of excellence focused on the health needs of the District, co-located with major tertiary teaching hospitals. The Institute signs MOUs with industry partners such as Hitachi, Microsoft and Siemens.
2023
Agreement is reached for Ingham Institute Macarthur, our second site. This will enhance community access to clinical trials and lead research of national significance in areas that matter to our population.
2024
The Australian Centre for Cancer Equity (AcCE) was established as a founding partnership with SWSLHD and the NSW Cancer Institute. AcCE’s mission is to address and eliminate disparity in cancer outcomes nationally and globally.
Professor Kaz Negishi was appointed as the Chair of the new Cardiovascular Research Hub – a partnership with Victor Chang, UNSW and SWSLHD, to strengthen heart research nationally.
Design commenced for the Perich Centre for Robotics, Medical Devices and Health Technology. The Centre will be a multidisciplinary playground for assessing, accelerating and adopting innovation in healthcare technology.
A partnership with the International Medical Robotics Academy (IMRA) saw a state-first surgical robotics training program delivered in Liverpool, training the surgeons of the future right here in South Western Sydney.
2025 and beyond
We launch The Perich Centre for Robotics, Medical Devices and Health Technology and the Australian Centre for Cancer Equity.
Ingham Institute Macarthur opens, focusing on health conditions of importance to the Campbelltown community.
Planning commences for Ingham Institute Bankstown.
