In “Merlin II – What Lies Beneath” artist Celeste Wrona combines a series of images of cancer at a cellular level as seen under the Merlin microscope.

A strong focus in this piece is the strong lines and patterns that are seen in these slides, holding a two-fold meaning, firstly of the strength and seemingly unbreakable chain and web that cancer creates, similarly it also reflects the strength of families, friends and the individual and the bonds they form and the power of their fight that dares to face cancer head on.

Beneath all this however is the fragility of the cancer cell as well as the fragility of the cancer sufferer and their families. The lines in this work are both confident and wary, determined yet restrained. This artwork looks at the cancer battle and both the beauty and struggle that this brings.
