Liverpool Diabetes Collaborative Research Unit

Diabetes mellitus is the sixth leading cause of death in Australia, with complications from the disease significantly impacting the quality of life for sufferers.  South Western Sydney has one of the highest prevalence rates of the disease in New South Wales.  According to the Australian Diabetes Map published by Diabetes Australia in 2013, there are 11,626 people with diabetes (including gestational, Type 1 and Type 2) living in the Liverpool local government area (or 6.5% of the local population).   Much research is needed to prevent, manage as well as delay the onset of complications from diabetes.

The Liverpool Diabetes Collaborative Research Unit (LIVE DIAB CRU) was formed in 2014 and is a multi-disciplinary research collaboration with the following objectives:

  • Encourage communication and facilitate collaboration between different research groups involved in research in the field of diabetes in South Western Sydney
  • Acquire and consolidate resources to advance research in the field of diabetes
  • Promote high quality diabetes research in areas that would benefit residents of South Western Sydney

While several departments from Liverpool Hospital are affiliated with LIVE DIAB, at its core are experienced clinicians with the Departments of Diabetes and Endocrinology, Ambulatory Care and the High Risk Foot Service.

Areas of research interest include diabetes associated micro and macro vascular complications with particular emphasis on diabetic foot disease, the interplay between in-patient care and diabetes, gestational diabetes and the identification and development of clinical pathways and programs pertinent to South West Sydney.

Leadership of LIVE DIAB CRU is by a four member executive - A/Prof Vincent Wong, Dr Namson Lau, Mr. Matthew Malone and Prof Hugh Dickson.

Current group leader is A/Professor Vincent Wong.
